A recent Scott Kelby blog began asking noted photographers to make a contribution each week.  John Paul Caponigro did a piece on June 4th, which he titles in his own blog as Visual Verbal.  In response, Vincent Versace said, "Photographs are visual poems, and what better way to practice visual poetry then with written poetry?"

For me, I certainly agree : : Photographs Are Visual Poems.  Beyond that, as the Muse prompts me to write, other emotional and intellectual capabilities come into play.  In effect, written poetry teases other elements from my mind, sometimes as an epiphany.

Light’s Passion Play  ~ with a strong placement in a Member's Choice Competition for our local camera club, Enchanted Lens, I submitted three entries. Anasazi Moon and Lavender Dawn won critical acclaim.

In the light rubric, I found myself hearkening back to some of Shakespeare's quotes about light. Finding that they most often reflected deep feelings from either Julia or Romeo, I went back to take a look at Academy award-winning Shakespeare in Love.  Combining the two concepts with my own photography began to tease me in a deeper, more fundamental fashion.

The result is Light's Passion Play; I hope you like it!

The Subway ~ my friend David Lyons is an exacting photographer. He loves to make long wilderness treks, repeatedly seeking evocative images when the light is just right.  The Subway is far up a distant canyon in Zion National Park.

That day, David was able to capture golden light reflected horizontally back into the Subway.  Never mind that he set his D2X a foot off the ground for the best angle.  Never mind that it was his second trek to get the light right.

Read an interview with David following that incredible feat...

Bosque Impressions ~ winter, sand hill cranes, and Bosque del Apache skies create the kinds of pictures which remind me of wearing a velour outfit and sitting in an ice cream parlor with your favorite ice cream.

At the Bosque, a shooters favorite spot might be The Deck.  Looking East, you spot incoming birds.  Looking south, there are a few mountains.  Looking West, perhaps there is a brilliant sunset.

But you find, back in the digital darkroom, it was not so much the birds as it was the birds caught against the velour skies.  The magnificent color backdrops take your breath away as the birds seemed to mark different sky positions...

Dare to be Blessed ~ Storm Across the Valley was one of the immortal songs John Denver sang.  Doesn't a magnificent picture also bring to mind an emotionally appealing song?

For a brief 24 hours, I lived in the photographer’s dream world.  I captured a forgotten Anasazi ruin, precariously ran across wet slick rock get a magnificent rainbow, and lined up a canyon, it's wall, and another magnificent rainbow in a panorama!

Various judges, jury, and member competition systems found each of these appealing.  You can find these results in our Awards section at Smugmug.

As passion and time allow, I find myself stepping beyond photographic poetry, to write about the deeper feelings those tone poems evoke.  As time permits, I plan to continue their exposition...
